Programme Notes

The famous verses by Laurence Binyon are here juxtaposed with the text in Latin and with verses from Psalm 23.  The piece was written in 1995 and now seems to have been a precursor of all of those slow moving motets and anthems which have become popular with audiences and choirs alike.  It received a performance under my direction in the context of a service for All Souls day at the Church of Our Most Holy Redeemer in Clerkenwell, London in 2003.

This is a hushed and quietly intense setting of text from Laurence Binyon’s celebrated poem, For The Fallen, and excerpts from both Latin and English versions of Psalm 23.  The organ provides a sustaining accompaniment, mostly of single long-held tones, open fifths or four-note clusters.  This spareness becomes silence in the central sections where the choir sings a cappella.
