Programme Notes

These days, Eleanor Farjeon’s most widely known work is perhaps the popular children’s hymn ‘Morning has Broken’, written in 1931 to an old Gaelic tune.  Less well-known is her Advent carol ‘People, Look East!’, usually sung to an old French melody, and a favourite with children’s choirs.  Ronald Corp here creates his own version (2010), using the traditional melody and adding a driving 6/8 accompaniment that brims with infectious joy.  The women sing the first verse in unison, then the men the second; they all come together in four-part harmony in the third, and in the fourth, the men sing out the melody beneath the women’s three-part harmonies.
